The Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) recently presented Dr. Paul Nagy with the Joe Gitlin Award. This award is presented annually in recognition of outstanding lifetime contributions to the field of imaging informatics through the development of innovative, high-impact solutions. The award particularly honors pioneering contributions to informatics methods and devices that have facilitated advancements in imaging and/or medicine.
Dr. Paul Nagy’s research career is characterized by his pioneering work at the intersection of medical imaging, informatics, and real-world evidence generation. His core research focus is on developing biomarkers from medical imaging to enable reproducible evidence from observational research, with a strong emphasis on open science and open-source solutions. Dr. Nagy is our BIDS program director and leads Johns Hopkins’ Observational Health and Data Science Informatics (OHDSI) efforts.
Highlights of his career and contributions include:
- Pioneering Imaging Informatics: Dr. Nagy is a trailblazer in imaging informatics, helping clinicians use technology in patient care and enabling information technology and data science at the point of care.
- Dr. Nagy has played a central role in the formation of the American Board of Imaging Informatics (ABII) and its Certified Imaging Informatics Professional (CIIP) certification program. He served as a past chair of the ABII and has been a strong advocate for the CIIP certification.
- Multi-Modal EHR & Imaging Research. Recognizing the untapped potential of medical imaging data for observational outcomes research, Dr. Nagy has been a leading force in developing the OMOP Common Data Model (CDM) extension for medical imaging.
- Grant Funding and Publications: Since 2021, his OHDSI research group at Johns Hopkins has secured substantial grants and contracts from federal agencies like the FDA, NIH, NSF, and CDC. He is a prolific author with over 150 papers.
