Dr. Peter Greene recently retired from his distinguished career at Johns Hopkins, during which he made significant contributions in the realm of health information technology. He served as a BIDS faculty member and course director for “Leading Change Through Health Informatics.” Dr. Greene trained and mentored a generation of students and faculty alike as one of the field’s foremost thought leaders in the use of IT in healthcare.
Dr. Greene was appointed as Johns Hopkins Medicine’s first Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) in 2006. This role highlights his early and sustained leadership in integrating technology with clinical care. He also served as the institution’s first Associate Dean for Emerging Technologies (appointed in 2001), demonstrating a long-standing commitment to leveraging innovation in healthcare. He has been a pivotal figure in the deployment and optimization of Johns Hopkins’ unified Epic EHR system. His efforts contributed to Johns Hopkins achieving significant accolades, including Epic 10-star status for three consecutive years, HIMSS Stage 7 recognition, and CHIME’s “Most Wired” designation. He has also actively addressed clinician frustrations with EHRs, focusing on improving efficiency and usability.

Dr. Greene has championed initiatives to improve data sharing between patients and clinicians. He advocated for making notes available in the patient portal, rolling out an Epic Bedside patient portal for hospitalized patients, and implementing interfaces with platforms like Apple Health and Google Fit, all aimed at giving patients greater control over their health information.
As Associate Dean for Emerging Technologies, Dr. Greene provided strategic guidance on high-impact, enterprise-wide internet initiatives and helped establish an “Internet incubator” to evaluate promising new businesses or internal initiatives within JHM. He served as the principal sponsor in 2014 for the launch of the Johns Hopkins Medicine Technology Innovation Center (TIC) which served as a dedicated hub within Johns Hopkins Medicine focused on collaborating with researchers and healthcare providers to create and implement digital healthcare solutions.
Dr. Peter Greene is recognized for his foresight in bridging the gap between clinical medicine and cutting-edge information technology, driving significant advancements in healthcare delivery, patient engagement, and technological innovation at Johns Hopkins.
